EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

We can never predict when or where an emergency may arise but we can make preparations that could save our lives.  In recent years our Country has been faced with terrorist attacks and devastating hurricanes, floods and tornados.  We can do much in our communities by having well planned responses to such events.  Below are some simple guidelines to follow.

bullet

Make sure your children know their last name, phone number, address and your name.  Have them carry some form of identification with them to school.

bullet

Make sure every member of your family knows an alternate route home.

bullet

If family members are unable to get home, have a designated meeting place.

bullet

Store emergency supplies in your home in sealed containers such as plastic tubs that are taped shut.  This should include first aid supplies, canned foods, flashlight and batteries.  You should keep enough water for at least 3 days.  You should also keep blankets handy.  Don't forget about your pets during emergencies.  You should assume that you will be without electricity and running water.

bullet

Your family should have a communication plan.  In the event that your family would be separated during an emergency, choose an out-of-town relative that your family can contact.  Carry this person's phone number with you in your purse or wallet.  Just letting someone know you are alive and well can prevent confusion.

bullet

Parents, you should know the emergency plans for your child's school or daycare center.
